Flood Mitigation
Western North Carolina has had a long history of flooding, the most recent being Hurricane Helene, in September 2024, that devastated much of Buncombe, Yancey, Madison and Haywood.
In 2021 and 2022 Southwestern Resource Conservation & Development received $100,000 from the NC General Assembly for flood mitigation. Southwestern RC&D used that money, along with a $100,000 match from United Way, to help other farmers and families affected by flooding. Through our advocacy, the NC General Assembly continues to prioritize flood mitigation across North Carolina and work will continue in our region to assist with these vital projects. In 2023 the State Legislature appropriated another $100,000 to Southwestern to be used specifically for flood mitigation. We are using this money to assist all seven counties and the EBCI, with flood mitigation issues.
Additional funding is anticipated for 2025 to continue this valuable program.
